Girls Camp

I was asked by some sweet ladies in my former ward to help them write their song and skit for Girls Camp in August. They are using "The Wizard of Oz" as a theme, which lends itself very nicely to making analogies with gospel principles. I was excited to embark on this project, and I think they were pleased with the results. The song is to the tune "If I Only Had A Brain" that the scarecrow sings in the movie. The lyrics are as follows:
When you're campin' with Young Women
There's hikin' and there's swimmin'
But values are there too.
Choice and accountability
Or Good Works and Integrity
And don't forget Virtue!
You must learn to show compassion
It always is in fashion
I promise this is true!
Be of good courage and strong
This scripture will not lead you wrong
And it's the proper thing to do.
Oh I can tell you why
Faith is a value true
Divine Nature lets you know you're special too.
Individual worth...
There's just one YOU!!!
And at last we come to knowledge
It helps you get to college
(We're hoping BYU)
Where you'll get a degree
And a mate for eternity
Unless your name is Sheri Dew!

The skit for camp will have Dorothy as the only speaking character, and she will recite the narration as other characters come out at the appropriate time to be introduced. It reads as follows:

"I start every day in this blue gingham dress
And this yellow brick road
Acts as my GPS
But I often get bored
With the same things each day
And admit there are times
When I'm tempted to stray.

That wicked old witch
I have really been hatin'
She's evil and mean
She reminds me of SAtan!
But often I find
When I need it the most
In comes Glinda the Good Witch...
(she's my Holy Ghost!)

I came to a crossroads
Thaqt I didn't know
But then got some h elp
from a friendly scarecrow.
We kept on our trail
I felt fear, no denyin'
And then we met up with
The Cowardly Lion.
We soon met the Tin Man
Who seemed very smart
But he then informed us
He needed a heart.

The strength I received
From my ruby red slippers
Is very much like
When I pray and read scriptures.

And when some things look nice
like that big poppy field
They're filled with temptation
Be sure not to yield!
It took a slight snowstrom
The good witch had brought
It felt like repentance
I had clarity of thought!

When we finally reached Oz
And the magical Wiz
He was just a poser
Not what folks think he is!

The lessons I learned
Amidst all of this "bother"
I have all I need
to return to the Father.
But I must keep my eye
on the prize as I roam...
Most important of all~
There is no place like home!
